Rheingau cuisine is regional, seasonal and down-to-earth. But above all it is closely intertwined with the region’s winegrowing tradition. Riesling wines, with their low alcohol content and fruity acidity, are an excellent accompaniment to food. Zwiebelkuchen, Handkäs mit Musik, Spundekäs and Riesling soup are classic delicacies, which perfectly complement the wines of the Rheingau. Local chefs are skilled in combining the traditions of hearty Rheingau cooking with lighter, fashionable Mediterranean and international influences to produce dishes such as red cabbage steamed with figs or free range pork braised in elder oil. Fresh asparagus grown in nearby areas, freshly caught trout from the Wispertal valley, game from the Niederwald forest and wild and medicinal herbs from the new herb kitchen in Assmannshausen are some of the most popular regional specialities.
