On the first day, the hike leads from the Rhine Valley over the Rheingaugebirge mountains, the western part of the Taunus. On the second day, you hike through the Niederwald, a south-western foothill of the Rheingaugebirge, and reach Lorch on a panoramic high-level trail. This takes you from the vineyards to the forests interspersed with rocks and all the landscapes of the Rheingau. Churches and monasteries along the way bear witness to over 1000 years of history. The vineyards here, which date back to Roman times, produce one of the best red wines in Germany and the Riesling, with its fine acidity, has achieved world renown. Last but not least, the excellent rail connections are a real challenge for a route tour. The hike is particularly suitable for spring and fall. The time shortly after winter is also highly recommended, when the first flowers are already appearing at lower altitudes. Good walkers can complete the tour in two days with an overnight stay in Aulhausen.
There are variations for hikes lasting up to three days:
1st day to Stephanshausen, 2nd day to Rüdesheim 3rd day to Lorch or 1st day to Marienthal, 2nd day to Assmannshausen 3rd day to Lorch. The deviations from the described route between Marienthal and Assmannshausen are minor, marked and easy to find with the recommended 1:25,000 map.
