Actually, Thomas Jänen just wanted to build a dancing ballerina for his daughter. However, during his research, the automata maker from Sankt Augustin near Bonn stumbled upon a fascinating world that he could not let go of. The works of Paul Spooner, Amadeo Capelli, and Gary Spetzler opened up a completely new universe of wood, mechanics, and movement for him. “I knew right away: I want to do that too.”
Today, about two and a half years later, mechanical wooden figures that move, tell stories, or simply make you smile are created under the name automata.love. His motifs include monsters, ants, and others. He combines traditional craftsmanship such as carving and sawing with modern techniques like digital drawing and laser cutting. Over the past years, he has acquired numerous skills – from mechanical principles and woodworking to design and painting with airbrush. And patience is now also part of the craft: “I have tried several times to measure the working time of an automaton. Eventually, I always gave up because I get lost in the work and simply forget to keep counting.”
In the exhibition “Automata Love”, around 15 works can be seen. The selection ranges from early monster automatons to the first three works of his ant series “The ANTOLOGY” to his cats and dogs. In addition to well-known works, Jänen also presents new and previously unpublished pieces.
For Jänen, the exhibition at Mechanicum Rüdesheim is something special. There is a collection of works by some of his great role models, including Paul Spooner, Neil Hardy, and Peter Markey. “For me, it is a great honor to be able to show my own works in this place.”
The exhibition is expressly not intended to be a place where art is viewed only from a safe distance. Jänen’s wish is rather for it to be a “playground for adults and children”: a place to discover, experiment, wonder, and laugh. Because sometimes all it takes is a crank, the push of a button, and a small piece of wood to bring a whole new world to life.
